Faire, the wholesale marketplace company, laid off about 250 employees on Wednesday. This is the second time in just over a year that the company has laid off workers, although this second restructuring appears to be bigger. Faire is an online marketplace that connects independent brands with retailers that can stock their products in their stores. Faire recently announced a partnership with Shopify that established Faire as the preferred wholesale marketplace for Shopify merchants. Shopify also became a shareholder in Faire as part of the deal, which Insider first reported on in July.

Shopify has held talks to make a strategic investment in Faire, the wholesale marketplace company, according to two people familiar with the matter. The Canadian e-commerce company has discussed taking a stake of about 5% in Faire as part of the deal, one of these people said. While Shopify is better known for catering to DTC brands, B2B e-commerce has become a larger focus for the Canadian e-commerce company in recent years.

Scale AI laid off 20% of its workforce this morning, Insider has learned. Scale AI has raised more than $600 million from investors like Tiger and Y Combinator and was valued at $7 billion. Buzzy artificial intelligence data-management startup Scale AI, which was last valued at $7 billion in 2021, laid off 20% of its workforce Monday morning, Insider has learned. Founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo, Scale AI was a member of the prestigious accelerator program Y Combinator's summer 2016 cohort. However, the job cuts at Scale AI – once a Silicon Valley darling – seem to suggest otherwise.
The growth of e-commerce has opened new private equity opportunities, a top investor said. The $941 billion private equity firm took a majority stake in Supergoop last December. The investment valued Supergoop, which makes sunscreen and sun protection-focused makeup, at some $600 million to $700 million at the time, Bloomberg News reported. "What is at work here is the colossal, growing nature of private equity everywhere," said Carter Dougherty, communications director for the progressive advocacy coalition Americans for Financial Reform. Some $78 billion of that is in private equity, with the rest across real estate, hedge fund solutions, and credit and insurance, according to filings.
